Taking the Numb out of Numbers
I believe that life is to be enjoyed not endured.
In June 2012 British education minister Michael Gove chose endurance over enjoyment when he proposed that children should know up to their twelve times tables by the age of nine. (The current target is for children to know up to their ten times tables by the time they’re 12) He expects his target to be achieved by rote learning. Hear every teacher, child and parent groan in dread of the monotony and increased pressure.
In October 2012 Andrea Greenandpleasantland inventor of Vapoosh!, chose enjoyment again when she proposed children develop an enthusiastic interest in numbers through play and encouraged parents, carers, teachers, friends, family, children and you to stand up for enjoyment in education.
I believe that as a team we could put an end to the anaesthesia that is rote learning of tables by asking our local schools to start playing Vapoosh! instead. Who knows maybe by the time players are nine they will know up to their 12×12’s and have enjoyed learning.
“It’s a miracle that curiosity survives a formal education.”
